STIEPEL VILLAGE CHURCH

In the churchyard there are numerous, unique, old grave stones. The oldest dates from the year 1600th, many of them are still in very good condition. This lovely church situated in Bochum-Stiepel, a suburb with mainly village-like characteristics. Surrounded by old trees, it is a very idyllic place. 1000 years ago, Imma, the wife of Count Luitger from the Billunger family and a sister of Bishop Meinwerk from Paderborn, had a church built for her use on her private property in Stiepel. This first single-nave church was replaced by a basilica of Romanesque style during the 12th century. Later in the 15th century it was extended to the hall church of today.

VILLAGE CHURCH (BOCHUM STIEPEL) AND THE HISTORIC CEMETERY

This small, beautiful cemetery from the Middle Ages is right in my neighborhood.
The church complex is located in Stiepel, the southernmost district of Bochum. West of the Kemnader lake and not far from the river Ruhr is the church with 110 m above sea level. NN about 30 meters above the valley floor and is thus widely visible in the Ruhr Valley between Bochum and Hattingen. I always like to come here, an inspiring place.

  • Springtime at the historic cementary

Well, it was about time for me to visit this wonderful, historic cemetery in my neighborhood again. And this time in April, so in the spring time to photograph the newly awakened nature. And of course the old, historic tombstones. I was there very early in the morning to take advantage of the special light for the photos.

This work of art is well hidden on the site of the historic cemetery at the Stiepel village church. The work "Head-Stone-Pavement" created by the Bochum artist Christoph Werdelmann attains a spatial dimension in a corner of the churchyard-cemetery. The 18-strong installation for “Sculptura V 2006” was originally created in the pilgrimage town of Kevelaer, where it was exhibited for 18 months. As part of the "Stiepeler Kultursommer 2012" Werdelmann presented his work on the evangelical village church in Bochum-Stiepel and made it available as a permanent loan. The focus is on the head as an anatomical part of the body with the seat of the central sensory organs for receiving images and sounds. Through the process of natural weathering, the individual heads acquire a changing, individual character.
